Join us for an open discussion for parents who have been dealing with pandemic school (fully virtual, hybrid, homeschool, on campus, etc.) Our featured speakers kick off the discussion by sharing their range of experiences to help provide different perspectives and support. Learn strategies and get advice for how to approach summer and next school year.

Nancy Poon Lue, Co-founder, Advanced Education Research & Development Fund

Nancy Lue is an entrepreneurial leader with over twenty years of experience as a strategist, operator, and investor in the education and social impact sectors. She advises edtech companies and nonprofits on pandemic response, strategic planning, board governance, and creating scalable impact. Nancy is a 50CAN 2021 National Voices Fellow and the author of a forthcoming book about the experiences and impact of first-generation college graduates.

She is the co-founder of the Advanced Education Research & Development Fund, a collaboration between the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to dramatically accelerate innovations in learning through incubation of a new research and development organization modeled after DARPA. She previously served as Executive Director at the venture capital firm Global Silicon Valley (GSV) where she oversaw the launch of their edtech accelerator and the annual ASU+GSV Summit. Prior to moving to Silicon Valley, Nancy served in the Obama Administration as a senior official at the U.S. Department of Education, where she led all of the federal agency’s strategic planning and performance management initiatives, including the development of its five-year strategic plan. Nancy was previously a Principal at The Advisory Board Company where she led corporate strategy and new product development for the launch of the firm’s global higher education division, The Education Advisory Board (EAB). She also worked as Vice President of Strategic Planning for Edison Learning, the nation’s largest K12 education management company.

Nancy has served on the boards, advisory committees, and appointed commissions of more than a dozen education organizations. She was named a 2019 Presidential Leadership Scholar by Presidents Bush and Clinton and a 2018 Silicon Valley Woman of Influence by the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Aila Malik, Founder + Principal at Venture Leadership Consulting

A lawyer by schooling and nonprofit executive by trade, Aila Malik has been a change-agent in her community and the nonprofit sector, at large, for over two decades. In 2015, Aila founded a unique management-consulting firm, Venture Leadership Consulting, partnering with not-for-profit organizations to drive performance and scale solutions that close systemic gaps of inequity. She has received recognition for her leadership, activism, and tireless service.

In 2018, Aila and her family (husband and three children) realized a decade-long dream to travel the globe together for 54 weeks. With an emphasis on building empathy and global community through humanitarian and environmental learning, the family of five (Franklin Street Globetrotters) visited 41 countries and partnered with over 25 NGOs/initiatives to preserve cultural and natural wisdom.

Living with intention as a compassionate advocate of community kindness, planet protection, and family togetherness, Aila is deeply committed to contributing to a world in which disparity does not limit people’s access to opportunity.

Shahla Yaghoubi, Independent Educational Consultant

 Shahla Yaghoubi is an Independent Education Consultant for Northern California. When she moved to California from New York in 1996, she worked in start-up and Fortune 500 technology environments in Silicon Valley in the field of Corporate and Sales Finance. Shahla obtained her MBA/MIA from Columbia University and in 2002 she completed her ESL/EFL certificates and began working with adult language learners. She is currently an active participant in her children’s Parent Organizations holding leadership roles and chairing functions. Shahla and her family have traveled to Iran, Oman, UAE, Turkey, and all over Europe. She is fluent in Farsi and speaks basic French.
